Breathing cities

Future opportunities for city and country with and after Corona

Crises change the city. They influence our idea of the city, the way we use it on a daily basis, but also the process of how cities and their surroundings are planned and built. There will be no such thing as the much-vaunted "new normal" because the future has changed course. What can we learn from the crisis for "urban design for people"? How can our cities be made more resilient, crisis-proof and livable? In any case, they need more air to breathe.
In the face of serious cuts resulting from two years of Corona - and this superimposed by flood disasters, war and refugee migration - we want to reflect on what consequences the pandemic unfolds for the spatial organization of our coexistence in the city and the country as well as what future models can be derived from it.
The summer of 2022, the event series "Städtebauliches Kolloquium" at the Faculty of Architecture at RWTH Aachen University aims to stimulate the discourse on future opportunities for city and country. The colloquium will discuss the following questions: What will the food production of tomorrow's cities look like? Where will we work in the future? How can a conversion of a neighborhood from office to residential use be implemented? Will there be a new balance of city and countryside in the future? What does a re-sorting of the urban-rural relationship look like?
