Research Module: Urban Planning Blueprints - Energy Districts

On the way to a more sustainable future, the energy supply of our cities plays a central role. As part of the energy transition, fossil energy sources are increasingly being replaced by electrical alternatives, for example in cars. However, the growing demand for electrical energy poses major challenges for the local energy supply. The expansion of regenerative, decentralized and volatile energy production systems, e.g. photovoltaic systems, increases the pressure on the power grid even further. In the future, we will increasingly need an energy supply that is geared to the prospective developments, requirements and needs of individual quarters. But which types of quarters are their own and how do “energy quarters” actually differ from an urban planning perspective?
As part of the research field, predefined neighborhood types are to be examined with regard to their use as energy districts. Based on urban morphology, building structure, use and other indicators, applicable "blueprints" are to be developed in order to clearly differentiate districts and their energetic potential from each other. These blueprints are then to be tested using the example of a large German city and visualized as a vision of the future.
