M2/3: Climate Quarter AachenCopyright: städtebau
Summer Semester 2020
Duration: 2 semester
Alternative, but no less interesting topic to the Göderitz Competition - New City.
Reason and aim
Cities are complex structures that are constantly changing and confronted with new framework conditions. One of the major challenges for the future development of cities is climate change. Weather extremes with higher temperatures, less but heavier precipitation and hurricane-like wind speeds will place considerable strain on urban structures and systems. For this reason, neighbourhoods must be planned and developed as climate-friendly, adaptable and changeable (resilient) as possible, and resource-efficient.
Task and location
Based on an intensive examination of the main topics of climate change, climate adaptation and resource efficiency, the project aims to develop ideas and measures for the development of the Lützow Barracks and its surroundings in Aachen-Ost and to design a suitable urban structure.
The Bundeswehr site, which is still used today as a maintenance and training barracks, is located east of the Aachen-Schönforst district, directly on Trier Straße and the Aachen-Brand motorway exit. Due to its exposed location and its size of approx. 40 ha, the site offers the opportunity to develop a new, very independent urban quarter between Aachen and Brand. The area is flanked by different quarters and uses, such as the 70s residential quarter Driescher Hof beyond Trierer Straße, the industrial area Neuenhofstraße bordering to the north, the residential quarter Schönforst to the west and the eastern boundary to the Aachen-Brand district by the motorway embankment of the A44. In recent years, a DIY store and the new police headquarters have been built on the area at the corner of Debystraße and Trierer Straße. As a previously 'forbidden' location, the area behaves within the urban fabric like a foreign body that is deliberately separated from its surroundings and is not networked.
The task is to design a mixed and urban climate-neutral and climate-adapted quarter with an independent character. By using different building typologies as well as identity-giving spatial and open space structures, a new address is to be formed. For the location, a programme for mixed uses with service, craft and non-disturbing commercial units, appropriate in type and scope, is to be formulated for the neighbourhood and structurally integrated in spatial terms. For the private, communal and public open spaces, sustainable green structures and utilisation offers for development, recreational and leisure uses with special design qualities for public and private open spaces are to be developed.
In the first part of the Master of Architecture, an urban development concept (M 1:2,000) with an in-depth urban development design for the neighbourhood centre (M 1:500) is developed, and in the second part of the project, a building or building ensemble is in-depth developed in cooperation with a chair of structural engineering. In the Master of Urban Planning, the focus in the first part is on the overall urban development design (M 1:1,000) and in the second part on the in-depth technical and green infrastructure and possible implementation strategies. Within the framework of the new Master's examination regulations for urban planning, the project can also be an M2 project and, if necessary, a subsequent M3 project.her information will follow soon.
