Campus of the future

RWTH Aachen University is one of the most important urban building modules in Aachen. With its various campus areas, the university extends across the entire city in different urban structures. Starting with the inner-city, historic Campus Mitte, around the main building, there are the Campus Königshügel, the Campus Melaten and the future Campus West.

The most recent campus development, the Melaten Campus, has a particularly homogeneous structure similar to a technical park with little quality of stay. Supported by its suburban location, there has been no urban development link to the other RWTH campus areas and no special design and use of the public campus space as a place of knowledge, exchange and recreation.

In cooperation with Professor Thomas Gries from the Institute for Textile Technology RWTH Aachen University (ITA) and the Düsseldorf visual artist Thomas Schönauer, innovative and forward-looking design concepts for the public space on the Melaten campus are to be developed through art and culture, mixed use and urban wellbeing.
