Jecken am Werk

The historic Aachen parcel "Elf Jecken" is to be transformed into a socially just and climate-sensitive neighborhood called "Jecken am Werk". The area was once a major industrial and commercial site, but now it is to become a healthy mix of new and old residents:inside. In order to integrate the large-scale commercial halls into small-scale residential and mixed-use structures without applying the principle of tabula rasa, a small-scale network of green courtyards, public squares and multifunctional traffic areas will crisscross the neighborhood. Transition zones with a low degree of sealing connect the green network and enhance the infiltration effect during heavy rainfall events. The proposed Jecken am Werk is described as a hybrid of courtyard and perimeter block development that is oriented to existing structures in order to integrate them and engage with existing stakeholders. New forms of housing and the aspiration to create living space, especially for neglected population groups, lead to a creative mix of building types and are also expressed externally in the heterogeneity of the neighborhood. The inclusion of existing stakeholders such as Tertia and DHL supports the rapid integration of the new development into the existing urban and social context.

Urban development project of the Au Banan Group

The previously chaotic and forbidding commercial area in the north of Aachen will be structured and revitalized by a mixture of living, working, culture and local recreation. In order to prevent social disparities, the neighborhood creates housing opportunities for people of all socio-cultural backgrounds. Through communally usable inner courtyards and roof terraces, a dense building structure, short distances and efficient floor plans tailored to needs, a neighborly feeling of living is created. Existing commercial spaces are consolidated into compact, verticalized structures, keeping players on site. At the same time, the neighborhood creates new space for innovative commerce. The cultural center of the design is the "Fafnir," an urban shelf that functions with the adjacent plaza as an interaction and meeting space. The inventive spirit and creativity that is palpable in the north of Aachen is brought together in the Fafnir and lived out in an individual and free way. The adjacent green space will be developed as a local recreation area for the neighborhood and further the north of Aachen. The renaturalized Wurm invites to recreation. A greening and play concept guarantees a long-term and quality enhancement of the landscape.

MakerSpace Düren

The former tank regiment's barracks are located on the edge of the city of Düren. Currently, it is used by a car repairer mainly as a parking lot. This area, as a large, sealed surface, acts as a separating element between social groups. The potentials of the innovative industries and the surrounding nature are not used properly.
With our Maker
The MakerSpace is a place for self-production and learning from each other, a place for the presentation and communication of ideas, products, works and skills. It is resilient through local production and collaborative building. It also opens up freely playable indoor and outdoor spaces.
Along a sequence of places, each dedicated to a theme such as art or craft, there are residential buildings, collaborative workshops and coworking spaces, as well as buildings for small-scale enterprises.

Update Garden City

The task was to work out ideas and measures for the development of a new neighborhood on the former barracks site on Stockheimer Strasse in Düren and to design a suitable urban structure with open space qualities.

As the title "Update Gartenstadt" already reveals, we looked at Howard's historic garden city concept and reinterpreted it using current trends. With the historic concept, we adopted the aspects of self-sufficiency, green planning, and social community. On this basis, we have developed a differentiated green concept, a self-sufficiency concept, a car-free mobility concept, and a neighborhood app. Unlike Howards, however, we do not aim for a separation of uses but rather a mix of uses.

In addition to the garden city concept, we have oriented ourselves to the following guiding principles: Neighborhood and Community, Local Supply and Local Value Creation, Green Infrastructure, and CO2 Neutrality.

The Bendplatz is located in the north of the city of Aachen in a valley between Königshügel and Lousberg. Except for a seasonal use as a funfair - the "Öcher Bend" - and as a parking lot, it lies fallow the rest of the year. Together with the new Campus West as an extension of the RWTH Aachen University and the Masterplan 2030 for the restructuring of the urban region, the area around the Bendplatz is given a new meaning.

Within the scope of our task, we first had to examine and analyze the Bend and the surrounding areas for various aspects. Using the gained knwoledge as a basis we designed a concept to assign a new function to the Bendplatz, to connect it and its immediate surroundings more intensively with the neighboring areas and to achieve an urban upgrading of the quarter. The design refers in particular to a new interpretation of urban production, urban agriculture, and the concept of "short distances" along with vertical stacking and greater intermixing of uses.

Bend-Up

Our Project Bend-Up is the approach of introducing a new player into the existing surrounding structure: start-ups. By sharing the desire for innovation and the power to shape everyday urban life, a start-ups focus has the potenital to reactivate and innovate the city.

A green belt not only constructs the space for communication and interaction, but also reacts to the composition of buildings with different sizes, hights and functions, from co-working hubs to residential blocks and fabrication labs
