5G Infrastructures for cellular energy systems enhanced through artificial intelligence
The new 5G wireless communication standard enables faster, safer and more reliable data exchange and thus offers room for innovative solutions to existing problems. A central area of application for the 5G technology will in future be the energy sector.
Initial situation
Due to the expansion of decentralized, renewable energy sources as well as controllable loads and storage (e.g. electric mobility), the control of energy systems - with the aim of maintaining stability - is becoming increasingly complex. At the same time, the need to expand the electricity grid should be kept as low as possible. One approach to mastering this challenge is to divide the energy network into cells within which a decentralized, largely autonomous load and feed-in management is carried out.
Objectives of the overall project
The main objectives of the project are the development and evaluation of concepts for cellular energy systems, whose regional extraction and generation behaviour is optimised by means of machine learning methods. The billing in such autonomous energy cells takes place directly between the units involved (Smart Contracts). Furthermore, the feasibility of additional services that are only made possible by 5G networks, such as data-rate-intensive, automated remote maintenance of distributed infrastructures by drones, is analyzed. The networking of all units of a cell required for this, while maintaining the necessary service quality guarantees, cannot be implemented using current, public ICT infrastructures (LTE, etc.). On the other hand, new types of 5G mobile radio networks enable a dynamic, dedicated allocation of location-based transmission resources based on shared communication infrastructures (regional network slices) for energy system applications by means of network slicing. New business models that open up in the process are being researched, as is the interaction with urban development resulting from the cellular structure of the solution.
Tasks of the institute
In this project, the Institute of Urban Development is researching the manifold interactions between the new 5G infrastructure to be created and urban planning. On the one hand, the integration of the 5G infrastructure into the urban space is investigated. On the other hand, the direct and indirect effects of 5G applications on urban design will be worked out, analysed and transferred into a transfer concept for future projects.
