Initial situation

The objective of sustainable urban development in the sense of the New Leipzig Charter is not only to increase building density and a greater mix of uses. Above all, the focus is on the interlinking of different uses with the goal of livable, resource- and land-saving urban quarters. The potential in dense urban areas between different types of use is particularly high: Due to different resource requirements and in part anticyclical peaks in use, the overall requirements can be reduced through an exchange of energy and resources already at the block level.

Objectives of the overall project

The study investigates operation-related exchange potentials of the resource water in high-density inner-city building blocks. Based on best practice examples, concepts for the exchange of energy and resources via water between residential and commercial uses will be developed in cooperative workshops with actors from the trades and construction in test planning for two inner-city brownfields in the cities of Düsseldorf (large city) and Kall (small town). In the commercial sector, the focus is on manufacturing craft enterprises. For the development of the concept, technical and actor-related aspects are to be considered together with urban planning framework conditions of the resource exchange on the building block level. The aim is to identify the mutual benefits of water coupling for increasing resource and energy efficiency on the basis of the two types of use and to specify the conditions of its feasibility.
