NRW Urban and Regional Planning Exhibition - Dynamics and Transformation of Cities on the Rhein 1910 – 2010+
One hundred years after the pioneering "Allgemeine Städtebauausstellung," which was held in 1910 in Berlin and shortly thereafter took place as the "Internationale Städtebausstellung" in Düsseldorf, the MA:I Museum für Architektur und Ingenieurkunst NRW and Regionale 2010 designed an urbal and regional planning exhibition under the title "Dynamics and Transformation of the Cities on the Rhein 1910 – 2010+."
Kolleg Stadt NRW was responsible for the scientific organization of the exhibit.
The location for the Regionale 2010 was the RheinForum on Konrad-Adenauer riverbank in Cologne from November 4, 2010 to March 2, 2011. Additional exhibition locations were the Wandelhalle des Landtags from March 5 to April 12, 2013, and the Liebfrauenkirche in Duisburg from September 13 to October 13, 2013.
The Exhibition Concept
In a bold juxtaposition of the big cities on the Rhein between Bonn and Duisberg, legendary plans and projects from the past one hundred years will be taken into account, which are and were defining for urban planning. Planners, architects, and city planners will be introduced who contributed crucial impulses to urban planning in NRW and significant concepts and plans.
The spatial focus of the exhibition is on the development of the urban planning for the cities Bonn, Cologne, Leverkusen, Düsseldorf, Neuss, Krefeld, and Duisburg with their regional interlacing. The Rhein, as a pulsating vein of transport, economics, and culture is the red thread, so to speak, throughout the presentation. The change in the river's meaning in the last one hundred years plays a central role aside from other factor and conditions of urban development.
The selected cities are not only an example of the change in the Rhein region but are also an example of diverse transformation processes in Europe with their various economic, social, and cultural characteristics and the specific related developments.
The exhibition contemplates the history of planning and urban planning in the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries in North Rhein-Westphalia. The past, present, and future of urban planning on the Rhein are reflected and classified as an active contribution to current discussions of urban developments within the context of significant planning discourses, European reference sites, and historical framework conditions.
The exhibition is subdivided into three chapters:
- rhein:reise shows the transformation of the cities through historical and current photographic panoramas
- stadt:wandel explains the "Urban Development Histories" in 12 components
- zukunfts:blick focuses on the profile of the city of tomorrow with facts and visions
