HEALTHY URBAN LANDSCAPE
Future concepts for health, environment and architecture
Life in cities and the region is changing. In this context, the topic of "city and health" will become increasingly important in the coming decades. The built form and its functionality of neighborhoods, cities and regions influence the health and quality of life of their populations. Environmental as well as social (spatial) factors play an increasingly important role in medicine, public health/health science and spatial planning. Air pollution and temperature rise are well-recognized risk factors for human health in cities. Conversely, a living environment with plenty of green spaces and appealing aesthetic design, little sealing, good infrastructure and functioning social networks are known health-promoting factors that help prevent disease.
Demographic change and immigration are creating new challenges in connection with the health care infrastructure and the health care of the population. A large number of institutions and research projects are working on this. Model projects such as the health kiosks in the context of the International Building Exhibition Thuringia also show possible ways of rethinking architectural requirements with innovative models of infrastructure.
In the winter of 2023/24, the "Urban Planning Colloquium" event series at the Faculty of Architecture at RWTH Aachen University aims to stimulate discourse on healthy neighborhood development and new models of climate-sensitive environmental design and supply infrastructure. The colloquium will discuss the following questions: What are the spatial and aesthetic requirements for healthy urban landscapes in the future? How can the requirements of climate protection and climate adaptation be shaped in favor of a better environment as well as human health? What contribution can the inner city with its underused areas make?
