On 17 September, the OecherLab and the ACCorD funding project are organising the Festival of Mobility, which is taking place in the Kapuzinerkarree as part of European Mobility Week. The Stadtwerkstatt is represented here with results on the redesign of the Grabenring from the seminar "Forum City and Landscape" at the Chair of Urban Design at RWTH Aachen University from the summer semesters 2019 and 2020.

What quality of stay could the Grabenring have if it were only passable for limited car traffic? What activities and uses could take place in the many parking spaces along the ring if these areas were no longer needed for parking cars?

Around 150 bachelor's students of architecture dealt with these questions and developed various ideas for the design and use of 18 sections along the Grabenring. In some cases, adjacent buildings were integrated into the planning, from which an activating use for the location is to emanate. A variety of ideas for very different areas for residents and visitors to the city have emerged. They can promote lively neighbourhoods, bring greenery into the city and generally enable more leisure activities in the urban space.

The idea was based on the scenario of a car-free city centre that only allows residents and delivery traffic as well as taxis and bicycles, scooters, etc. up to the Aachener Alleenring. This would greatly relieve the Grabenring of traffic and could be designed in the form of a shared space in which all road users use the same urban space. This scenario is based on the idea that, in the long term, autonomous vehicles used like taxis will replace private cars in many cases and thus lead to a drastic reduction in the ownership of private cars and thus the need for parking spaces in cities. In addition to the traffic calming of the street space, there is also the possibility of converting the many parking spaces. The new design offers the opportunity to develop a higher design and quality of stay for a central Aachen urban space.
