RESILIENCE + CITY

How can we make our cities healthier and more resilient to crises?

Our cities and our daily lives are increasingly confronted with extreme events of various kinds. Crises and disasters like the Corona pandemic or the extreme weather events like floods and heatwaves show us how important resilience strategies are for cities and communities.

Dealing with the challenges of climate change adaptation, health care, and environmental justice are becoming more of a focus for planning disciplines. The memorandum for "Urbane Resilienz – Wege zur robusten, adaptiven und zukunftsfähigen Stadt" which was developed by a panel of experts and adopted in May 2021 at the Federal Congress on National Urban Development Policy, brings together the demands and formulates concrete recommendations for action for the development of cities and communities.

Urban resilience manifests itself at the various spatial levels - in the neighborhood, in the city and in the region - and affects different fields of action. A good concept of urban resilience must follow the criteria of climate protection and climate adaptation. It is based on at least five capabilities: Robustness, flexibility, learning capacity, multidisciplinarity and holistic, solution-oriented thinking.

In the winter of 2021/22, the event series "Städtebauliches Kolloquium" at the Faculty of Architecture at RWTH Aachen University aims to stimulate discourse on the role of resilience and its spatial implications and interactions with urban space. The colloquium will discuss the following questions: How can urban resilience be strengthened? What measures need to be taken at the municipal and regional level? What contribution can an innovative health landscape make to promoting resilience? What are the challenges posed by the climate crisis? How can urban space be made more robust and sustainable?
