MOBILITY + CITY

Mobility is facing a radical change. Air pollution, congested roads and a lack of public transport are among the major challenges facing our cities. The trend towards urbanisation offers many opportunities to promote the change towards a liveable environment and more attractive public spaces, but the course must be set anew. The climate protection goals can only be achieved if not only a switch to alternative propulsion systems takes place, but also a reduction in traffic volume (traffic avoidance) and a comprehensive shift away from private cars to more efficient means of transport. So far, however, it is unclear how a transformation to sustainable mobility can be implemented and what consequences this will have for our cities and society.

Serious changes are expected for cities and especially for the mobility sector in the coming decades. There are different ideas about the strategies for dealing with these changes. While the automotive industry is relying on technology and new incentives, others are calling for a more radical and rapid change in traffic patterns and habits.

One thing is certain: urban development and mobility go hand in hand. Although the interaction between space and mobility is of the utmost relevance, it has not yet been sufficiently considered.

The Urban Design Colloquium will focus on the turnaround in transport and its effects on space and its actors, and will explore the following questions: How do we want to move in the future? How can we reconcile mobility and accessibility with climate and environmental protection goals? What will cities that are attractive and worth living in look like in the future?
