Crossing borders

How can planning master barriers?

Challenges such as climate change and the sustainable design of our cities and regions know no spatial boundaries. Recent events have shown that national goals cannot be considered in isolation from the EU level. With the European Green Deal (DEG), the European Commission has presented an ambitious program with the goal of achieving the sustainable transformation of Europe into a climate-neutral continent. The New European Bauhaus (NEB) initiative ties into this and addresses the intersection of art, culture and social inclusion to realize a more sustainable future. This European initiative is almost a call to follow a common path of cross-border cooperation and planning in border regions.
With the spatial strategy 2038+ for the Rhenish mining area and the spatial strategy ZL'EU for South Limburg, visions are already being set in motion that show the potential of connectivity of planning guidelines and concepts.
The event series "Urban Planning Colloquium" at the Faculty of Architecture at RWTH Aachen University aims to stimulate discourse on cross-border cooperation in planning in the winter semester 2022/23. The colloquium will discuss the following questions: How can the initiatives such as the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Parkstad in the Netherlands sustainably promote cross-border cooperation and the discourse on experimental project development? Which "jumping-off points" of cross-border action should be used in perspective? How can a new quality of cooperation succeed in crossing borders?
