Students Build for Students in Congo
After four weeks of hard physical work, a residential building and a kitchen building were now completed for Congolese students of the University of Kananga. It is a joint project of the Department of Urban Design and Regional Planning of the RWTH Aachen University, the University of Siegen, and the Universite´ Notre-Dame du Kasayi in Kananga, Democratic Republic of Congo. During planning the special climatic and economic conditions of the region had to be taken into account. Financial and technical resources required an interdisciplinary and innovative approach - 25.000 Euro were made available for the realization. Local craftsmen could bring in their knowledge, therefore the project was always guided by the principle of mutual learning. The financial realization was only possible with the support of the Foundation of German Architects in the House of Architectural Association NRW, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the 'Association for Development and Exchange with the Universite´ du Kasyi´ as well as a contribution by the Department of Urban Design and Regional Planning itself.
